Fred Douma
With heavy hearts we announce the passing on March 3, 2020, of Fred Douma at the age of 96 years old. Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Uncle and Friend. He passed away peacefully in presence of his Lord. He was born in de Hommerts, Friesland , the Netherlands on December 2, 1923. He married his beloved wife Fay (Bakker) in 1952 and they immigrated to Canada in November of the same year. They settled in the Okanagan. A long-time resident of Vernon, Fred was a devout Christian and a founding member of the Vernon Christian Reformed Church (East Hill Community Church today). He served as an Elder and sang in the choir for many years. He had an abiding love of the scriptures. Fred began working in Canada doing such things as, a farm hand, working at a mill, and skidding logs with a horse in forestry.He had received his baker’s certification in Holland and when the opportunity arose he returned to his chosen profession and worked for King’s Bakery in Vernon. Soon after he began working for Vernon Bakery and eventually purchased the business. He enjoyed great success and the bakery was well known for its ‘quality products. He retired from fulltime work in the bakery at age 65 but continued helping when needed. In retirement Fred loved spending time with Fay, working on his house, gardening, puzzling and being with family. Fred leaves behind his beloved wife Fay, his four children, Harriet (Al), Wolter, Renee (Evert), and Ron, his 13 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren.
Celebration of Life service will be held at East Hill Community Church in Vernon, B.C. at 1PM on Saturday March 14, 2020. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the caring and supporting staff at Gateby Longterm Care Facility.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Fred’s name to World Renew.
