Police Dog Tracks Suspect After Oyama Break-In

A 28-year-old Vernon man is in custody after being tracked by a police dog search unit and arrested for allegedly fleeing the scene of a break and enter in Oyama early this morning.

Lake Country RCMP responded to a commercial alarm triggered at Oyama General Store just before 1 a.m. and officers saw a suspect fleeing from the store upon their arrival.

Police set up a containment area and called in a police canine tracking team out of Kelowna.

A man was tracked to a nearby area and then arrested without incident.

RCMP say they recovered hundreds of dollar’s worth of lottery tickets, bottles of liquor, cell phone accessories and lighters stashed near by.

“RCMP recovered hundreds of dollars worth of lottery tickets, bottles of liquor, cell phone accessories and lighters stashed near by,” said RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “We believe our suspect’s escape may have been slowed, due to the sheer number of packages of cigarettes concealed in his pants.”

O’Donaghey says the suspect faces potential charges and remains in police custody at this time.
