Signs Up In West Kelowna Against Flicked Cigarettes

If you drive through West Kelowna this summer, you’ll likely see a sign warning against flicking a cigarette butt from a moving vehicle.

The city has spent three thousand dollars  to post signs in various areas to educate the public and try to prevent fires.

The signs note a bylaw fine of 500 dollars to anyone caught flicking a butt.

The provincial government fine is 575 dollars.

The signs are at the following locations:

“Westside Road North – 200 metres north of South Bear Creek Road
“Campbell Road – 1 kilometre south of Highway 97
“Glenrosa Road – 100 metres north of Highway 97
“Gellatly Road South – 200 metres north of Highway 97
“Elliot Road – 10 metres north of Reece Road
“Paynter Road – 75 metres north of Highway 97

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has already agreed to install similar signage at the entrances to the community along Highway 97.

West Kelowna Council is also encouraging other Okanagan communities to install signage to ensure a consistent message for the traveling public.
