Funtastic was ‘Phenomenal’ (Other Than the Weather)

Other than some weather issues, the 34th annual Funtastic Festival was a big hit with the participants.

Over 200 teams took part on the four day slo-pitch tournament — and thousands took in the nightly concerts at the DND grounds.

President Rob Ellis says it was a great success.

“They (participants) absolutely loved the music lineup. They were not happy with Mother Nature — none of us were happy with Mother Nature — it posed a lot of challenges and problems, but overall we were able to adapt and worked through them,” Ellis tells Beach Radio News.

Ellis says safety concerns about wind and rain led to the concerts being shut down for about 50 minutes on Saturday night in between the Dirt Road Kings and Appaloosa.

“We made some alternation and did some changes. We had a packed beer gardens, and I stopped the show and did what I had to do to make sure everybody was safe and sound.”

The non profit society will be tallying up the proceeds and determining how much money can be put back into the community in the form of annual grants.

Ellis says it would have been nice to see more sunshine, the lack of which may have hurt their beverage sales.

“It’s a definite concern that we do have. We did have an amazing turnout, but whether that turnout was consuming beverages that go towards the community or not, we’ll know fairly soon.”

He says there were no major incidents over the four days.

“The RCMP were happy. We had nothing in the beer gardens, nothing on the ball diamonds. It was phenomenal man. The participants had a great time, all the volunteers, they were smiling and they were interacting with everybody.”

Ellis says he can’t thank the hundreds of volunteers enough for the time and effort they put in.
