Casinos Scale Back Operations Due To Strike

A strike is underway at Vernon’s Lake City Casino and three other casinos in the Okanagan and Kamloops.

Close to 700 BC Government Employees Union members walked off the job at 3:01 pm Friday in an effort to get a better wage offer from Gateway Casinos.

The company’s spokesperson, Tanya Gabara, says they will remain open using non-union staff, but with reduced hours.

“Obviously we will be adjusting parts of the operations, so specifically in Vernon, we will be adjusting the  hours of operation to suit the staffing levels that we will have,” Gabara tells Beach Radio News.

Gabara says Vernon’s outlet will be open just 5 days a week from 12 pm to 10 pm during the strike, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the Match Eatery won’t be operating.

“But we are trying to operate, and will operate, as much of the business as we can, and welcome our customers daily.”

Gabara says the company is open to more discussions with the union to reach a mutually agreeable contract.

Open letter to Gateway customers from the company:

The Lake City Casino Vernon is open for business. We will not be closing during this labour disruption and we hope our customers will visit us soon.

During the labour disruption our hours of operation will be:
Wednesday to Sunday: 12pm to 10pm
Monday and Tuesday: Closed

All Slot Machines, Grab & Go and Cash Cage Operations will run normally during the site’s adjusted operating hours.

There will be changes to the operations of the following amenities:
a) Table Games, Match Eatery and Public House, and the Buffet will remain closed.
b) Lottery payouts will be capped at $500 – the designation as a regional prize payout centre will be suspended until job action ends. Lottery product will still be available for purchase at Guest Services.

We were surprised that the union decided to end mediation before there was a discussion on wages. The union’s decision to go on strike before wages were addressed is unfortunate for our business and for our employees. We remain open to meeting with the union and hope that they choose to return to mediation. We also encourage our employees who disagree with a strike to make it clear to the union that they don’t want a strike and want to continue working to support their families.
In closing, we remain committed to having respectful discussions with the union to achieve a mutually agreeable contract that is reasonable and responsible for both our employees and Gateway. However, regardless of the outcome, we will be open for business and hope you will come visit us soon.
