Cameras In The Park

Jun 4, 2018 | 6:14 AM

You might want to smile when using some downtown facilities, as there’s a good chance Big Brother — or in this case — the City of Vernon — will be watching.

City operations director Shirley Koenig says surveillance cameras have been installed at the Parkade, near the washrooms on 31st Avenue, and are close to being finalized in Polson Park.

“We’ve posted the policy on our website and we’re just finalizing the privacy impact assessment, so everything should sort of come together hopefully by the end of next week,” Koenig tells Beach Radio News.

Eleven cameras are being installed in the park, as a way to deter crime and make people feel safer.

(“The sites) were chosen by our consultant in consultation with staff to make sure they were getting the high, prominent areas,” says Koenig.

Koenig says the images will be available to bylaws staff and RCMP if they need to review any incidents.

“Someone may be monitoring (the video), but that’s unlikely. If there was an incident, we will have the ability to go back in time and find the image on the cameras.”

City council approved spending $35,000 for camera equipment for  the park back in March.

Signage will be added to let people know about the surveillance.
