Carbon Emissions Up In Armstrong

The City of Armstrong saw an increase in carbon emissions last year.

They went up from 177.47 tonnes in 2016 to 208.52 tonnes last year.

Mayor Chris Pieper says a large part of the increase can be traced back to local fire crews.

“Our fire department was working outside of our municipality on forest fires last year for, I believe 6 weeks, so there was a lot of fuel involved with keeping fire trucks going and all that.”

The city has to record that fuel use even though the firefighters were in other areas of the province.

Snow clearing crews also had extra fuel usage as they spent more time clearing streets due to a heavy snowfall.

The Mayor says there are targets for this year.

“By buying more fuel efficient vehicles, by looking at our infrastructure in our water treatment and in our sewer, to become more energy efficient in motors and pumps and stuff like that.”

There is also a plan to plant 15 trees in specified green spaces and encourage community stewardship of water resources.”

Pieper says the arena is also looking at more efficient lighting.

The city has a community-wide emission reduction target of seven per cent by 2020 and 15 per cent by 2030.
