Weather May Stir Up Waves

Okanagan Lake is 57 centimetres below its high water mark of last year — but officials are concerned about the impact of upcoming weather.

The possibility of high winds and wave action have prompted crews in the Central Okanagan to begin installing log booms on the lake to protect public infrastructure and beachfront areas.

The booms will be installed near Swim Bay in Peachland, and at Kelowna’s Hot Sands Beach and Maude-Roxby Bird Sanctuary.

“The log booms, supplied by logs from Tolko Industries, will be anchored with chains attached to concrete blocks placed on the bottom of the lake. The blocks will be marked with buoys on the surface and boaters are asked to keep away from the log booms to avoid damage,” says a release from Central Okanagan Emergency Operaitons.
