Update: State Of Former Legion Building ‘Unacceptable’

The City of Vernon is hoping a property owner will take action to clean-up a site in the downtown.

Mayor Akbal Mund says they’ve received a number of complaints about the former Legion building on 31st Avenue.

“The Legion site has been an issue for the last few months. More of the street-entrenched population has moved into that area.So we have contacted the owner of the property to tell him the property is becoming unsafe,” says Mund.

A rep for the owner has told the city, the site will be cleaned up, and a permit for demolition will be in place by July 1st.

A four story mixed-use building has been proposed for the land.

The former Royal Canadian Legion building in downtown Vernon is generating numerous complaints to the City of Vernon.

A city staff report says there is concerns about safety, the appearance, and illegal activity at the site at 3301 31st Avenue.

A number of homeless residents have been using it.

The City says bylaw officers have had to attend to the site almost daily, sometimes with RCMP.

“Administration spoke with the owners’ representative by phone and advised of the current condition of the building and property, and the resources being required by the City to manage the property in its current state is unacceptable,” says the administration update.

The report says the owners’ rep apologized, and promised to have the site cleaned-up and secured, and that a demolition permit will be in place by July 1.

A four story mixed-use building has been proposed for the site.
