100th Annual Event Was ‘Perfect’

The 100th edition of the Falkland Stampede this past weekend was a huge success.

Manager Jason Churchill says it was better than imagined with perfect weather and outstanding fans.

His highlight was Saturday’s re-enactment of the bucking horse drive on the highway.

“We had really good help. Lots of good cowboys and everything just went perfect. I think the people that came to watch that were just kind of awestruck by the whole deal.”

Churchill says preliminary numbers suggest the Stampede shattered its previous record attendance by 25 per cent.

“For a three day attendance, yeah I think we probably come close to ten thousand people over the three days. That’s pretty amazing for a little town.”

Churchill thinks the near-perfect weather helped, with many of the fans coming from the North Okanagan.

Proceeds from the event go towards running the community hall and grounds keeping around town, but Churchill is hoping to do more this year.

“If we have a surplus of money, I know we’d really like to get a roof over our multi-use sports rink there. If we have enough money that would be what I’d like to see it go towards.”

The money tally should be known in a few days, and as always, Churchill says the event couldn’t go ahead without the many volunteers who turn out.
