Referendum Or AAP?

May 17, 2018 | 5:17 PM

The Regional District of North Okanagan board is debating how best to get voter opinion on a big ticket item for a local search group.

Chair Bob Fleming says the plan at this point is to use an alternate approval process to determine if money is borrowed for a new home for Vernon Search and Rescue.

“The dollar figure involved is borrowing up to $3.5 million, but there could be more discussion about that figure, and perhaps it could be worked down,” Fleming tells Beach Radio News.

Fleming says Coldstream has indicated a reluctance to use that process.

“It now goes out to the communities to take a look at it, and render their opinion.”

Fleming says going to a district-wide referendum could cost up to 150-thousand dollars.

“This would be from the far end of Area F and Area E, and through all the municipalities and electoral areas in between.”

The funds would be used to buy property and construct a new building for the search group.

The loan authorization bylaw also has to get provincial approval, which Fleming estimates could take a month.
