Signs Need Some Colour

May 15, 2018 | 6:14 AM

City council is calling for a little colour for the Welcome to Vernon signs.

Several councillors don’t like the look of concrete bases for the gateway signs on Highways 6 and 97.

Councillor Scott Anderson says the bases currently look like “bunkers.”

Councillor Brian Quiring says they spent a lot of time debating the look of the signs.

“I’m a little disappointed that we had kind of a cool, multi-coloured pattern on the base that is gone. It would be nice to see an alternative to that,” Quiring said to staff.

Council has directed staff to add some paint to the bases, to brighten them up.

The signs have been a lightning rod for controversy, after council rejected the initial designs, followed by the construction going 30-thousand dollars over budget.
