Spallumcheen Considering Joining BC’s Residential Recycling Program

May 14, 2018 | 6:12 AM

The Township of Spallumcheen is considering whether it should join Recycle BC’s Residential Recycling Program.

Mayor Janice Brown says reycling fees charged by the private hauler the township uses are going up substantially.

“We are one of the only communities that isn’t in the Recycle BC with the blue bin. We just have the bags and because the regulations have changed and because we have private haulers our recycling has just about doubled.”

The cost per property was 35 dollars and 17 cents.

“It has gone up to about 60 dollars a property in Spallumcheen a year and not everybody is using the private pickup. A lot of them haul it to the landfill site themselves, but everybody pays.”

She says part of the problem is the changing recycling marketplace where recyclers are having trouble finding places to send products.

“As different regulations come out with glass and cardboard and the market for them selling it has dropped so much, that they’ve increased us.”

Mayor Brown says the cost to the township has gone up from 30 dollars a tonne to 200 dollars a tonne.
