City Examines Flood Mitigation Costs

May 11, 2018 | 6:00 PM

The City of Vernon expects to spend 125-thousand dollars to remove sediment from creeks, and reduce other flood threats this spring.

City crews recently removed 75 tandem loads of sediment from BX Creek in the problem area of 48th Avenue and 20th Street.

Despite that, a resident in that area is trying to fend off the high water levels again this year.

Public works manager James Rice says in a report to council, city staff will be working with  consultants to develop a plan to address a number of issues associated with creeks and crossings over the next few weeks.

Rice says items to note include an annual sedimentation removal for lower reaches of BX Creek near 48th Avenue, city wide creek and crossing assessment, large scale creek dredging project (if assessment deems necessary), development of a larger sedimentation basin on BX Creek, and establishing creek flow monitoring stations.

Rice says the cost of an assessment of creek beds, culverts and bridges in the city is estimated at $120,000, while all of the dredging work could range from $800,000 to $1.2 million.
