Lake Country Pickleball Players Looking For Courts

The District of Lake Country is going to try to find more space for pickleball players.

Council Tuesday night received a petition from the local pickleball community asking the District to construct more outdoor courts.

Mayor James Baker says staff will look at making double use of tennis courts.

” I guess you can get about four pickleball courts on one tennis court. So we’re looking at simply putting some lines, repainting some of the tennis courts into pickleball.”

That might see see some competition between tennis players and pickleball enthusiasts, but Baker doesn’t think there would be a problem.

“Tennis seems to be not quite as burgeoning. We do have a tennis association, haven’t heard from them about sharing the courts.”

Staff also are going to take a look at some neighbourhood tennis courts that are in disrepair to see if they can be upgraded and include pickleball.

Baker suggests that if time comes, it may be worth building more mullti-use courts.

“Pickleball doesn’t seem to be waning at all. It’s burgeoning, so I would think some purpose built pickleball areas would not be money wasted.”

Currently, players are using the gymnasiums at George Elliott High School on Monday nights, but attendance is such that some people don’t get to play.
