A delegation from the Agricultural Land Commission is expected to arrive in Spallumcheen next month to look at designated farmland that the township wants to use for industrial purposes.

Mayor Janice Brown and township staff met with members of the ALC in Vancouver on Wednesday to request 44 acres of farmland be removed from the Agricultural Land Reserve in order to create new industrial land in its southeastern sector.

Brown told the commission the township wants to protect local farmers but it also needs a bigger tax base.

“We don’t want to put anybody out of business and industry would help us pay more taxes for more of the services that we offer to the whole of the community,” Brown told Beach Radio News.

She said the ALC delegation wants to look over the land in May and speak with members of staff as well as some local farmers.

The commission indicated that a decision on the proposal could be made in June, Brown said.
