Dog Complaints Down in RDNO

Dog owners within the boundaries of the North Okanagan Regional District appear to have had a better handle on their pets last year.

The District’s Bylaw Enforcement Officer says the number of complaints about dogs last year decreased by 45 per cent from 2016 to 577.

The biggest decrease was in complaints about dogs at large at 64 per cent, dogs barking excessively was down by 26 per cent  and aggressive dogs was down by 43 per cent.

Three hundred and 42 tickets were issued last year for various reasons and that was down 12 per cent from the previous year when 387 tickets were issued.

The number of dogs impounded decreased by 35 per cent in 2017 to 150 compared to 230 in 2016.

One hundred and twenty-one  or approximately 81 per cent of the impounded dogs were returned
to their owners,  20 or 13 per cent were given to the SPCA or new homes, up from 11 % in 2016, and 9 were euthanized, a decrease from 13
in 2016.

The sale of dog licenses was up 2 per cent  from 5,550 in 2016 to 5,663 in 2017.

The ten most common names of licensed dogs in the North Okanagan in 2017 were, in order, Bella, Bailey, Buddy, Maggie, Molly, Charlie, Max, Sadie, Cooper and Daisy.

The five most common dog species licensed in 2017 were, in order, Labrador Retriever, Shih Tzu, Shepherd, Poodle and Terrier.
