New Social Housing Project Awaiting Rezoning

Jan 17, 2018 | 8:36 AM

Plans for a new affordable housing project in Vernon are still in the early stages.

Annette Sharkey from the Social Planning Council says the city has agreed to provide the land in the 4-thousand block of Pleasant Valley Road, but no funding sources have been secured.

She says they are looking at up to 12 units.

“It will be more geared to low to moderate income earners, families, people with disabilities. This won’t have a focus on our homeless population. That would need much more intensive supports and staffing,” Sharkey tells Beach Radio News.

Sharkey says the next step is to see if the city approves rezoning from the current large lot residential…to four-plex housing residential.

“At this point, it’s very early days. We don’t have any funding in place for it. Really, to make it viable, the zoning has to go through, so we’re just waiting to see how council responds.”
