Kalamalka Beach Review Under Study

Coldstream Council will be tackling the issue of improvements to the Kal Beach area in the weeks ahead.

Council’s Tourism Committee has been going over a number of recommendations covering many issues.

Mayor Jim Garlick notes the District would be receiving approximately 65 thousand dollars that could be used for new designs.

“My own thoughts on it, it would be great to do an overall plan for that area, including roads and the beach itself and the parking lots.”

He says the city will look at two sides – what can be done sooner and what the long term plan is for rebuilding the area over time.

A staff report to the committee suggests considering existing issues such as traffic flow, the need for traffic calming and possibly a physical barrier to separate pedestrians and cyclists from vehicles.

One suggestion was to put in a boardwalk and remove the chain-link fencing.

The report also says sand should be improved and “built up” to create something of a barrier between the beach and the paved roadway.

The committee has also discussed whether it was necessary for the entire beach to be sand or if there could be a combination of sand and green space, similar to Rotary Beach in Kelowna.

It was suggested a grassed area could offer a nice option for beach-goers who wished to picnic or sit in a cooler area
