Mountie Says Fundraiser Produced ‘True Winners’

Jan 10, 2018 | 10:26 AM

An officer with the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP played a key role in a successful fundraiser for the BC Children’s Hospital.

Corporal Yannick Lescarbeau donates his time each year over the holiday season to raise funds for the Hospital by organizing an outside hockey tournament at Apex Resort near Penticton.

The 4th Annual Winter Classic Hockey Jamboree took place this past weekend and included teams (players aged 9 – 10) who competed on the outdoor rink from Kelowna, Penticton, Spokane, Burnaby, Richmond and Vancouver’s North Shore.

“This year the Penticton Jr. Vees were the tournament champions, but in the end, all the participants and organizers were the true winners, raising $26,462.75 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation,” says Cpl. Lescarbeau. “The tournament gains momentum each year raising a total of over $77,000 in the 4 years since its inception and is a way for us to give back to the community.”

Lescarbeau says the success of the tournament, both on and off ice, is due to the commitment of over 120 players, their families and corporate sponsors who donate their time to this good cause.

“Many RCMP officers donate their time in giving back to their communities whether it be in the form of coaching or volunteering for different groups or organizations,” says RCMP spokesperson Cst. Kelly Brett. “A lot of hard work and commitment goes into organizing an event such as the Winter Classic, which benefits Children all over BC. Something that is close to Cpl. Lescarbeau and his team.”
