New YLW Baggage System Speeds Up Check-In

Kelowna International Airport is celebrating its new outbound baggage system.

Airport Director Sam Sammadar says the 39 million dollar system speeds up the process of checking your luggage.

“Which deals with the screening of the bags, the throughput in terms of screening where we’ll get up to 900 bags per hour through the system, which is a huge improvement.”

That of course means the bags will get to planes sooner.

“There’s about 700 metres of conveyor in the system. About 214 drive motors that drive the whole system. The average length of a bag from the front end to the back end is about 80 seconds.”

The system uses the latest x-ray technology and sensors to modernize the procedure.

“When you look at the sophistication of the equipment that’s in there, the CTX machines, x-rays, the types of ways of taking pictures of the bags and all those kinds of things, there’s a whole security protocol

Sammadar says the system also harmonizes YLW’s security protocols with those in the United States.

Passengers will also see more room in the check-in lobby as well to help get them through quicker.

The system is part of a larger project and came in 8 months ahead of schedule.
