Transit Fares Rising

New transit fees have been approved by local governments as part of planned service expansion.

Vernon, Coldstream and the Regional District are all supporting  changes to transit fares which the local governments say will have several benefits.

“The simplified fare structure will encourage ridership and be less costly to administer. The existing single zone and multi zone fares will be unified into one, reducing the number of tickets and pass categories from 14 to 5,” says a joint release from Vernon, Coldstream and RDNO.

There will be one cash fare of $2.50 for all transit services, other than Route #90 to UBCO, which will rise to $5 due to the distance between Vernon and Kelowna.

The route 90 fee is currently $2.50, while the others currently range from $2 to $2.50.

All the new fares will start April 1, 2018.

“As it has been over 20 years since the handyDART fare has increased, increases will be phased in. On April 1, 2018 the handyDART fare will increase to $2.00 and on April 1, 2019 will increase to $2.50,” states the release.
