New Events For Winter Carnival
Several new events are planned for the 2018 Vernon Winter Carnival February 2nd to 11th.
Carnival Society Chair Deb White says they added 16 events for a total of 94 with many fitting the Carnival in Wonderland theme..
They include a Pancake Breakfast at Sovereign Lake and events at the Science Centre and Allan Brooks Centre and more.
“There’s a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, there’s a mother and daughter’s Tea in Wonderland, there’s a pool tournament at the Green Pub, there’s a tea blending workshop.”
Other events include a parka party with a pig roast at Predator Ridge, Battle of the Bands, a speed skating tournament, a lego building contest, a unicorn party and the return of square dancing.
A list of all the events is up on the Winter Carnival website.
Deb White says energy surrounding the carnival is strong
“You know, I’m getting calls from people and my business partners as well just saying Deb if you need any help just let us know. We want to give back to the community. How can we help out.”
Volunteers are still needed, especially for high profile positions.
“We are actually looking for Jopo and Jopettes as well as Carnival Cops. I know for them they have the best time because they wander around and go to the events.”
Anyone interested can contact the Carnival Society office.
The Carnival Society will be available for information at the downtown light up next week.
“We’re going to be downtown at the downtown light up on the 25th from 5 to 8. A lot of our directors will be there. The carnival buttons are ready ahead of schedule. So they’re ready for sale and they’re gorgeous buttons and also the brochure will be ready.”
Queen Silver Star won’t have a float this year since the city decommissioned it’s float, but the Queen and princesses will be riding in a car.
One other change this year will see the balloon festival take place on the final weekend instead of the start as it’s easier for the pilots bringing the balloons.
