Enderby Looks At Wildfire Protection

Enderby is taking advantage of the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative to access funds to update its wildfire protection plan.

Enderby was fortunate not to have to deal with a wildfire this season.

Mayor Greg McCune says it’s good to get a head start for next year.

“So, what we’ve now got approved to is do some groundwork also to just, whether it’s fire barriers or notify people in rural areas, you know, here’s what you can do to to your piece of property.”

He says it’s an opportunity to protect the city.

“We have the river on one side, which isn’t really a concern obviously and to the north we’ve got a fair bit of agriculture but to the south and the west, it’s heavily treed.”

McCune says the city has talked with the Splatsin First Nation about linking up their plans for better protection.

“You knows when work is done whether it’s along Canyon Road and across the top of our knoll, what can be done up there to eliminate the loss of residential homes and that type of thing.”

Forsite Consultants won the 22 and a half thousand dollar contract to work on the redo.

The city will also put up cash and in-kind contribution of up to seven and a half thousand dollars.
