Rescue From The Rise

Oct 5, 2017 | 11:40 AM

Vernon Search and Rescue was called in this morning to help with the recovery of an elderly man up on The Rise above Bella Vista.

Search Master Leigh Pearson tells Kiss-FM the man was hiking up on the mountain side with a couple of friends when he became separated from them.

“And then he kind of got himself turned around and because of the cold weather became extremely hypothermic. So he actually phone 9-1-1 and got hold of ambulance who immediately called us to help locate this guy.”

It didn’t take too long to find him, but he was well up the mountain side about 300 metres southwest of the end of the golf course’s first fairway.

“Just hiked up. I guess there’s a bit of a trail there. He got himself turned around and he got himself turned around and didn’t know the way out
so he called for help which was a good thing he had the presence of mind to do that.

The ambulance crew and members of the SAR team hiked up to find him.

“They did an assessment and because of the cold and the fellow’s age and such they decided they didn’t want to bounce him down a rough trail so they requested we bring in our helicopter winch team to extricate the fellow.”

He was then flown to Vernon Airport where an ambulance was waiting to take him to hospital.

The man was having some difficulty because of the hypothermia, but his current condition is not available
