Road Safety Tips

Road safety urged heading into fall, winter

Oct 8, 2026 | 12:51 PM

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP are urging people to be safe on the roads as daylight hours are starting to shorten.

Local Mounties reminded people that safety is the responsibility of both pedestrians, motorists and other road users.

People walking, cycling or using other alternative modes of transportation were advised to be safe by:

  • Avoiding distractions such as phones, headphones and earbuds, and paying attention to their surroundings
  • Being seen and predictable by crossing at crosswalks and intersections, and by wearing bright or reflective clothing in low light
  • Making sure it’s safe to cross by looking both ways and making eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road

Motorists were also urged to be cautious and aware by:

  • Eliminating distractions and keeping attention on the road
  • Expecting pedestrians by scanning crosswalks and intersections, especially when making a turn
  • Slowing down and adjusting speed for darkness, weather, low visibility and poor road conditions

“More and more we’re seeing people near traffic staring down at their phones,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, stated.

“Your attention needs to be on the activity around you.  When you approach an intersection or step into a crosswalk, even if you have the right of way, put your phone away, look up, and ensure it’s safe to cross before stepping out. Messages, videos, and scrolling can wait.”
