Budget, scope increased for new multi-use path project

The budget and size of a major multi-use pathway project has been increased, but most of the costs won’t be put on Vernon taxpayers.

Vernon City Council amended its Kalamalka Lake Road Multi-Use Pathway project Monday.

The work was originally planned to establish a multi-use pathway alongside the road between 14th Avenue to Highway 6.

However, the project has since been enhanced to also include a path from the Kal Lake Road and Highway 6 intersection up to Pottery Road; to include signal controls at the intersection of Highway 6 and Pottery Road; and to make a pathway along Pottery Road back to and beyond Kal Lake Road.

This project will also see the pathway connected to established sidewalks and pathways, building a connection from the area to the downtown core via Polson Park, the Rail Trail and Kal Lake Beach, and to the East Hill neighbourhood.

This new project supports previous plans by the city to work with the Ministry of Transportation to establish pedestrian-controlled crossing at the Highway 6 and Pottery Road intersection.

With the scope of the project expanded it was estimated to cost $6.9-million.  However, $4.98-million of that will be funded through grants, with $280,000 from the Build Communities Strong Fund, $1.7-million from the Growing Communities Fund, and $3-million from the Strategic Priorities Fund. The remaining $1.92-million will be funded from city reserves, with $1.64-million from the Infrastructure Reserve and $280,000 from the Sewer Reserves.

The original path project was estimated to cost $780,000.

City staff said the work could potentially begin this fall, but likely in the spring of 2027, with the goal of having it completed that fall.
