Vernon City Councillor not seeking re-election, endorses incumbent mayor

A Vernon City Councillor is stepping down after one term.

Brian Guy announced he would not run in the fall municipal election, ending his time in local politics after being first elected in 2022.

“It has been an honour and a pleasure to serve the people of this great city for the past four years,” Guy said in a release.

“I have worked hard, in the best interests of the entire community, to advance council and community priorities, and help move the city forward. However, after discussions with family I have decided that I need to make more time for children, grandchildren and other family members – while continuing to contribute to the community in other ways.”

Guy said he was especially proud of the work done to advance the Active Living Centre project, restore Vernon Creek through Polson Park, improve the transportation system, and address social and housing challenges.

Though he said more work could be done to improve life in Vernon, he will not be running again and instead hopes “the next council continues moving the city forward in the same direction.

Guy also endorsed Victor Cumming in his bid for re-election as Mayor of Vernon.

“Victor is a strong and collaborative mayor and has been an inspiring leader. He has the experience, knowledge, commitment, and passion needed to continue making Vernon an even better place to live,” Guy stated.

The local general election is on Oct. 17.
