Bald Range wildfire being held, no change to Evacuation Orders

Progress has been made containing the massive wildfire bordering Summerland.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said the Bald Range wildfire was Being Held as of Friday.

The fire sparked Aug. 8 and forced the evacuation of the community as the fire grew and burned an estimated 252 square kilometres of terrain.

The change to the classification indicated it was unlikely the fire would spread beyond the established perimeter.

Despite the re-classification, the Evacuation Orders and Alerts remained in place Friday morning.

The BCWS was still actioning the fire, with a focus along the west flank north of Isintok Lake as that area remained the most active part of the fire. The immediate threat to structures had passed so crews were also doing mop-up work around homes and crucial infrastructure in Summerland, as well as on the south and north flanks.

The fire was being actioned by 378 BCWS wildland firefighters, supported by 100 firefighters from Mexico and crews from Alberta and Quebec. The BCWS also had 10 helicopters, 57 pieces of heavy equipment, and a five-person structure protection crew assigned to the blaze.
