Air quality warning issued for the Okanagan

Wildfire smoke led to an air quality warning being issued for the Okanagan Friday.

Environment Canada issued the warning saying the smoke settling over the valley was expected to increase through the day and into the night, causing poor air quality and reduced visibility.

“During a wildfire, smoke conditions can change quickly over short distances and can vary considerably hour-by-hour,” Environment Canada said.

“Monitor the situation for any wildfires near your area at EmergencyInfoBC. Follow all emergency announcements relevant to your location.”

The B.C. Wildfire Service’s smoke forecast showed the haze was coming up from fires in the south and southeast region of B.C., as well as from fires burning south of the border.

Environment Canada advised people reduce their exposure to the smoke as it could impact their health.

“Some people are more likely to be negatively impacted by smoke. This includes people with lung and heart conditions, pregnant individuals, infants and young children, people aged 65 and older, and anyone whose health is affected by a chronic condition or acute illness,” the weather agency said.

“Exposure to high smoke levels can pose threat to your health regardless of age of health status. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the warning has ended. Stay indoors in a space with cleaner air.”

As of time of publication, the Air Quality Health Index rating for both Vernon and Kelowna was at Level 3, or Low Risk.
