The housing construction sector saw another decline in June.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported 13 housing starts in Greater Vernon this June.

That was down from the 19 housing starts in May, and from the 22 starts recorded in June of 2025.

As of the end of June, there had been 88 housing projects started in Greater Vernon this year, down from 107 in the same six-month period the previous year.

CMHC noted there were 44 housing projects completed locally in June, for a year-to-date total of 163 new homes built. The agency did not provide comparable completion data from the previous year.

The projects started locally this June involved five single homes, four row houses, two semi-detached homes and two apartments.

Kelowna

Kelowna also saw similar declines to mark the mid-way point of the year.

CMHC said the Central Okanagan city had just 207 housing starts in June for a year-to-date total of 1,143, both of which were down compared to the previous year.

Additionally, the province and the nation saw housing construction slow in June.

B.C. saw 2,940 housing starts in the most recent reporting month, down from June 2025’s 5,465 starts. However the province had seen a year-to-date total of 20,102 housing starts as of the end of June, which was just down from the 20,632 starts in the same period the year before.

Canada as a whole saw 20,265 housing starts in June, down from 23,282 in the same month the year before. Like B.C. however, the nation had seen a combined 113,017 housing starts in 2026, down very slightly from the 114,1413 starts in the first six months of 2025.
