Wildfire, Extreme Heat Preparedness

Special workshop for older adults in emergency situations

Jul 9, 2026 | 6:00 AM

A special workshop will be held to ensure people are prepared for emergency situations that arise with another hot, dry summer on the horizon.

NexusBC Community Centre in Vernon will host its Emergency Preparedness Workshop for Older Adults July 22.

The workshop will teach people how to prepare for emergencies that are common to the Okanagan, such as wildfires and extreme heat; how to create plans and grab-and-go bags in case evacuation orders are issued; and how to stay informed during emergencies.

“Emergencies can happen with little warning, and having a plan in place can make a significant difference,” Lee Brinkman of NexusBC Community Resource Centre said.

“This workshop provides practical information and simple steps older adults can take to protect themselves, stay connected, and be better prepared when emergencies occur.”

The workshop was designed specifically with older adults in mind and will have a focus on practical, achievable preparedness measures.

People can register for the one-hour workshop online here.

“We know many people intend to prepare but often put it off until an emergency is already unfolding,” Brinkman said.

“Taking an hour now to make a plan can save a great deal of stress later. You only need to take this workshop once to be better prepared.”
