Window installed at local home through Community Give Back program

A local company has continued its work giving back to the community.

KT Fairglass installed a brand new bay window for free at a house on 43rd Street as part of its Community Give Back Program Tuesday, June 23.

Todd Embley, owner of KT Fairglass, said the window was at least 20 years old and was no longer functioning as an insulator, and homeowner Gordon Passmore confirmed that fact.

“Not only will the window get updated but we lose a lot of heat and energy throughout the winter and summer months because of the window as it’s very drafty,” Passmore told Vernon Matters.

“So our family will get to have a more comfortable lifestyle in the more extreme weather conditions. It’s just really huge and we’re incredibly grateful for it.”

Embley said KT Fairglass gave Passmore an estimate for the eight-foot by five-foot window, saying it would cost around $3,000 all in to install. However the family could not afford the cost, at which point the company decided to bring the work under the umbrella of their program.

“As I learned more about what they were going through, with having two kids on the spectrum and and needing to basically be full-time stay at home parents, they weren’t able to continue to be employed and didn’t have the money, but I knew they had the one bid living room window that was 26 years old and had failed and was super cold in the winter and super hot in the summer, and it just seemed like the perfect candidate for the Community Give Back project,” Embley explained.

“So we jumped in and partnered with Durabuilt and they were more than happy to provide the window and for us to then go ahead and do the full uninstall (of the old window) and install of the new window.”

Along with having two kids on the spectrum Passmore is now self-employed as a Behavioural Interventionist and Respite Care Giver where he works with neurodivergent children, and he applauded the work by the window installers to also do something to give back to their community.

“I think one of the things [Todd] connected with is trying to make my own living to provide for my family, so being able to receive an act of kindness and service from him is cool,” Passmore said.

“Tt just really helps solidify my belief and my passion for community work and community involvement. So to be on the receiving end of community service is incredible, I love it.”

This was the eight window installed through KT Fairglass’s Community Give Back project, and Embley said they wanted to continue to grow the initiative so they would be doing one of these installs every month. People can contact the company or go through their website to apply or nominate someone in need for the free install.

Embley also told Vernon Matters he hoped this project would grow beyond his company and lead to other local trades offering free services for people in need.
