Coldstream, RDNO urging water conservation as supply concerns rise

May 29, 2026 | 10:15 AM

Greater Vernon Water customers are being asked to conserve water as drought risks persist in the area.

On May 7, the RDNO put Stage 2 Water Restrictions in place, limiting the time and type of watering people can do with their yards and gardens.

The District of Coldstream stated in a release Friday, May 29, that the conditions remained very dry with little precipitation and dwindling snowpacks over the spring, resulting in “lower-than-normal reservoir levels much earlier int he season.”

The district noted Greater Vernon Water (GVW) was already drawing on storage earlier than usual, and warned that Stage 3 restrictions could be put in place should conditions persist.

The municipality and regional district urged all GVW customers to:

  • Reduce watering to two days a week, and only during the allotted times
  • Reduce irrigation schedules to avoid overwatering
  • Only water during cooler hours, such as the late evening or early morning
  • Fix leaks promptly
  • Only use water when necessary

High water users, such as agricultural operations, were also asked to manage irrigation systems, monitor flow rates, and try to reduce their use by 20 per cent.

“Water restrictions are critical to ensure reliable water supplies for our community throughout the dry summer, to protect fish habitat, and maintain adequate resources for wildfire response,” the District of Coldstream said in a release.

“The success of these restrictions relies on community cooperation and compliance. Working together now while temperatures are lower will help us safeguard water for essential needs in the future when summer temperatures increase.”
