VSAR had busy weekend with three incidents, training

Vernon Search and Rescue had a busy few days responding to calls for help and wrapping up some needed training.

On Thursday, May 7, VSAR was called out to assist in a swift-water incident. The local boat team helped with the rescue and was able to ensure everybody got home safely.

Later that same day, teams were called out to find a cyclist who had set out on a long-distance ride on the rail trail but failed to return home. VSAR set out its boat, e-bike and drone teams and after several hours of searching, with assistance from Central Okanagan Search and Rescue, were able to find the rider. The individual was also safe.

On Friday, VSAR was called to Enderby Cliffs to rescue a person who was injured after falling down a steep section of terrain. VSAR joined RCMP and Enderby Fire teams at the scene and, using their motorized stretcher, were able to transport the person out of the area.

“Over the course of the week, we worked alongside RCMP, Fire, BCEHS — and at times, all three together,” VSAR said in a social media post.

“Strong working relationships matter in this line of work, and we’re fortunate to have great people beside us when things get busy. Those that fire together, wire together.”

Additionally, VSAR’s medical team completed recertification on extended medical protocols over the weekend, while two members successfully completed the Ground Search Team Leader course.

The incidents over the previous week led VSAR to reminding people to be aware of risks and be prepared before heading out recreating.

Rivers: Many creeks are swollen and running fast with spring freshet that could easily carry a person away, and VSAR recommended people avoid rivers and creeks until the water lowers to safer levels.

Training and Trip Planning: Have the knowledge and skills needed before heading out, and prepare for trouble outdoors such as sudden weather changes, unexpected injury and equipment failure.

Take the Essentials: Bring key survival items out in the back country including fire-starters ; headlamp or flashlight; signalling device; navigation tools ; extra food and water; clothing; first aid kit; pocketknife or multi tool ; emergency shelter; and sun protection.

Be Aware of Wildlife: Bears and cougars live in and around the North Okanagan, pay attention for any signs of these animals and carry bear spray when in the back country.

VSAR directed people to the AdventureSmart website for more safety tips and advice for when recreating outdoors.
