Kelowna seeks artists for Rutland Transit Exchange mural project

May 8, 2026 | 11:17 AM

Artists in the Okanagan are being invited to apply for a new mural project at Kelowna’s Rutland Transit Exchange.

The City of Kelowna is seeking proposals for a six-panel mural installation at the upgraded transit site at Shephard and Asher Road.

The work is intended to reflect Rutland’s agricultural roots, community gatherings and its evolution into a diverse urban neighbourhood.

“The City of Kelowna is committed to fostering a rich and vibrant creative sector,” said Christine McWillis, cultural services manager. “We want our city to be a place where creativity pops up everywhere you go and is accessible, inspiring, and truly part of everyday life.”

Officials say the project will enhance a highly visible public space used by daily transit riders.

“Art projects like this really bring a space to life,” said Sara Thirnbeck, community development coordinator. “Rutland already has so many amazing murals, this one will further add to that landscape.”

“Transit exchanges are places that people move through every day,” added Katie Sherwood, transit infrastructure coordinator. “Projects like this help make that experience more welcoming and reflective of the community.”

Okanagan artists, both emerging and professional, are eligible to apply. The selected artist will receive $5,500 plus GST.

Applications are open until June 8. Work is scheduled for July and August, with details available at kelowna.ca/artistopportunities.
