Jul 10, 2017 | 11:37 AM

Vernon property owners are about on par as previous years in getting their property taxes paid on time.

Taxes had to be paid by July 4th.

Tax notices went out to 20 thousand 262 properties, an increase of 179 from last year.

Just over 77 per cent of those tax accounts were paid on time, which is the same as last year.

The total amount of taxes paid was 95 per cent, a little bit under from last year.

The city says 11 thousand 116 homeowner grants were claimed, which is up from last year by 119, reflecting the number of new homeowners in the city.

The number of people who filed their taxes electronically was down slightly from last year.

That doesn`t include those who pay their taxes through their mortgage company or through the city`s Pre-authorized Withdrawal System.

Those that have not paid on time will be assessed a 10 per cent penalty on the outstanding amount as of July 5th.

If the taxes are not paid by December 31st, the account goes into arrears and interest will be charged until it is paid

An account would be considered delinquent the last Monday of September 2019, at which point a property could be subject to tax sale
