Vernon Transit fares to be reviewed

Mar 20, 2026 | 10:24 AM

B.C. Transit will be reviewing fares for the Vernon Regional Transit system this year.

A report from Coldstream staff said the review process would begin in April with local priorities being identified and timelines and engagement processes being set.

A kick-off meeting involving B.C. Transit and area municipalities will go April 6, which will be followed by the development of fare options and supporting analysis, reviewing and refining the options, and having municipal councils and boards present the options and make decisions.

“The current timeline prepared by BC Transit is anticipating working through the review in 2026, with Council/Board approvals in the summer to enable implementation in April 2027, subject to Council and Board approvals,” Coldstream’s report stated.

The report did not speculate on how much the fare could rise following the review process.

Along with reviewing the fares BC Transit will be looking at offering free trips on municipal election day, though that will need to involve work with the area jurisdictions.

The municipal election will be held on October 17, 2026, and, as a comparison, the report stated Vernon Regional Transit’s revenue from that same day the year before was $980.

The City of Vernon reportedly had decided to offer free transit services on municipal election day for routes in that jurisdiction, though the Regional District of North Okanagan had not offered free rides on election day previously.
