A local community leader and financial watchdog has passed away.

Barry Beardsell, a former chartered accountant who served as a member of Vernon City Council from 1997 to 2008, passed away on January 9 at the age of 85.

Beardsell was widely recognized as having a strong commitment to financial responsibility, both as a fiscal watchdog during his time in the council chambers and later as a citizen where championed transparent decision making and management of public funds.

“[Beardsell’s] dedication to ensuring accountability in municipal operations was well known, and his contributions left a meaningful impact on City Hall and on the broader Vernon community,’ Mayor Victor Cumming stated in a release on behalf of City Council and the community.

“We are grateful for his years of service and the principled leadership he brought to civic life.

“Our thoughts are with all who are mourning his loss.”

An obituary said Beardsell was survived by his sister Lesley (Harry); wife Judy; children Julie, Derek (Monica), Darcy (Tim) and Brad (Esther); as well as seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
