Prohibited driver arrested and charged in Kelowna

A routine traffic stop in a Kelowna school zone led to the arrest of a man wanted on multiple charges and warrants.

Kelowna RCMP were conducting proactive speed enforcement on Springfield Road at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, when officers stopped a vehicle driven by a person they believed was prohibited from driving.

During the stop, the driver attempted to mislead officers by providing a false name and claimed he had no identification. Police later confirmed the driver was Benjimin Moote, who was wanted on six outstanding charges and three warrants.

Moote was arrested and charged with obstructing justice, prohibited driving and breaching a release order. He later appeared before a judge and was remanded in custody due to his criminal history, which includes repeated failures to comply with probation and release conditions and continuing to drive while prohibited.

Sgt. Laura Pollock, Kelowna RCMP media relations officer, said the incident underscores the importance of following court orders.

“The drivers actions posed a risk to public safety and resulted in additional charges and custody,” Pollock said.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
