Vernon to distribute over $50k in Council Discretionary Grants, $20K to the food bank

The City of Vernon has over $50,000 to give to local non-profits and organizations.

A city staff report stated that there were five applicants who should be awarded funds through the October intake of the Council Discretionary Grant program. One of those agencies is receiving nearly half the available funds.

The report recommended council approve providing discretionary grants totaling $52,033 to:

Vernon Salvation Army: $20,300 (of $24,901.82 requested) to purchase furnishings and equipment for the new food bank

Abbeyfield Houses of Vernon Society: $10,233 to replace a medical alert system

Museum and Archives Vernon: $8,000 (of a requested $10,000) for the development of two major exhibitions and related education programming

North Okanagan Hospice Society: $6,000 for a new security call system

North Valley Gymnastics Society: $5,000 (of the $19,500 requested), for equipment upgrades

Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society: $2,500 (of a requested $5,000) for the costs associated with a community event

There were 12 other applicants for funding in the most recent intake period, and city staff recommended not supporting their requests. Those organizations include the Vernon and District branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, North Okanagan Childcare Society, Sky Volleyball Club, Shuswap Okanagan Treatment Centre Society, and Knox Presbyterian Church.

Vernon City Council will receive the report and discuss allocating the grants at the regular meeting Monday, Dec. 15.
