Fundraiser launched to help feed local kids in need

The organization that helps feed local kids is running its annual fundraiser.

The Kalamaka Starfish Society’s North Okanagan Starfish Program provides bagged meals for local students so they can have something to eat over the weekend.

“We know that one in five children in B.C. don’t have enough food at home,” Mary Jackson, President of the non-profit Kalamalka Starfish Society, said.

“Food insecurity is hitting our communities hard. The rising cost of food and housing make it challenging for families to ensure their children have enough to eat, especially on weekends.”

The bags contain two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, snacks, fruit and vegetables, and build off the school meal programs to ensure children in need have nutritious meals.

The group said it currently packs and delivers over 220 bags to 21 schools in the North Okanagan each week.

“We believe every child should have access to a regular, nutritious diet,” Darryl O’Brian, Society Vice-President, said.

“This promotes better health, learning, and the ability for students to thrive in their environment. We’re not just providing meals to students; we’re investing in their education, health and overall well-being.”

The Kalamalka Starfish Society said a donation of just $25 would feed a child for a weekend, while $825 could feed a student for an entire year.

People who wish to contribute to the cause and help feed local kids in need can donate through the North Okanagan Starfish Program website.
