Drainage Improvements

Drainage work planned for Vernon’s Okanagan Landing area

Aug 29, 2025 | 6:00 AM

The City of Vernon will be undertaking some drainage work on the south end of town starting in September.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, upgrades will be done to key drainage infrastructure on Smith, Eastside and Kokanee Roads.

“This work is part of the City’s Priority Drainage Improvements Project, aimed at modernizing aging infrastructure and improving stormwater management in high-priority areas,” the city said in a release.

The work will involve:

  • Ditching and stormwater upgrades to improve surface water flow and reduce erosion on Eastside Road
  • Installing new storm drains and upgrading ditches to manage subsurface drainage and peak flows on Smith Road
  • Improving ditches to better manage runoff and enhance roadside stability along Kokanee Road

The upgrades will require work to be done between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, with the occasional weekend work if necessary. The city noted Smith Road would be periodically closed for the work, and Eastside and Kokanee Roads will be subject to a single, alternating lane.

“All motorists and pedestrians are asked to follow posted signage and directions of traffic control to ensure safety throughout the work zone,” the city said.

The projects are expected to be completed by the end of November, barring any weather or other unforseen disruptions.
