Driver escapes flames

Quick response stops motorhome fire from spreading in Peachland

A fiery motorhome crash along Highway 97 near Antlers Beach triggered a large emergency response late Tuesday night.

West Kelowna RCMP say the motorhome veered off the northbound lanes of the highway and down an embankment. The driver managed to escape before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames, which quickly spread to the hillside.

Fire crews from Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna, and the B.C. Wildfire Service were called in, and their quick work prevented the blaze from moving toward nearby homes and infrastructure.

Highway 97 traffic was disrupted as crews worked to manage the fire, but the road has since reopened. Paramedics assessed the driver, and they did not report serious injuries.

“Thanks to the quick response of the fire departments and the B.C. Wildfire Service, a potentially much larger incident was prevented,” said Cpl. Devon Gerrits, media relations officer for the West Kelowna RCMP. “We are grateful the driver was able to escape unharmed and that no further injuries were reported.”

Mounties continue to investigate why the motorhome left the roadway.

Anyone with dashcam video or who witnessed the incident is asked to call West Kelowna RCMP.
