Safe Canada Day Celebrations

Vernonites reminded that fireworks are not permitted in the city

With Canada Day just around the corner, people in Vernon are being reminded to not set off fireworks or sky lanterns.

The city says these items are not permitted within the City of Vernon boundaries, and could pose serious risk to the community.

“With prolonged drought conditions we’re currently experiencing, it’s important that everyone stays vigilant and makes fire-safe choices,” Deputy Fire Chief, Brian Parsons, said.

“We all have a role to play in helping reduce the risk of wildfires.”

The City of Vernon encouraged people celebrate the nation’s birthday through other means, with recommendations such as by having an outdoor movie night, using glow sticks, noise makers and battery powered flameless candles, and having a bylaw-compliant campfire where permitted.

Fines of up to $300 can be issued for using or storing fireworks, with the city noting multiple fines can be issued for a single infraction.
