West Kelowna residents may get another chance at one-off water debt payment

After admittedly poor communication to residents in recent months about the repayment options and timeline on the debt on the new Rose Valley Water Treatment Plant, the City of West Kelowna is working on another option.

Many homeowners complained recently that they were given very short notice on May 31 to make a one-off payment of $2,750.

City staff are now working on allowing that one-off payment again in the fall.

The other option is for homeowners to pay $181 a year parcel tax, but that includes steep interest charges.

At a council meeting this week, concerns were raised by at least one councillor that some residents, especially seniors, may have felt rushed into making the one-off payment, without being able to properly consider the financial ramifications.

City staff said around 360 homeowners had so far made the lump sum $2,750 payment, although they couldn’t say how many of those were seniors.

Staff said they hoped to bring a recommendation to council in the coming weeks, allowing for a second intake in the fall for people wishing to make that larger, one-off payment.
