Major highway resurfacing project to begin in Vernon, West Kelowna, and Summerland

May 9, 2025 | 1:00 PM

A major highway resurfacing project is set to improve roads across the southern Interior, with a focus on Vernon a stretch of road between Venon and Oyama. That project alone will see 88 kilometres of Highway 97 and nearby side roads between Vernon and Oyama repaved, with an investment of $11 million. The work, which is part of a broader regional initiative, is expected to be completed by summer 2025.

The resurfacing project in Vernon is one of several significant upgrades across the region, as the province invests nearly $57 million in improving road conditions in 2025. In West Kelowna, 73 kilometres of Highway 97 and Highway 33 at Rutland will also be resurfaced as part of the provincial initiative. In Summerland, 80 kilometres of roads, including Highway 97 from Trout Creek, will also receive new asphalt.

The $11 million contract for the Vernon portion has been awarded to Okanagan Aggregates, with work expected to begin soon.

The upgrades are expected to improve driving conditions, enhance safety, and ensure smoother travel for both residents and visitors in the region.

Drivers are advised to remain cautious in construction zones, adhere to speed limits, and follow any traffic control directions to ensure safety.
