Vernon transit shelter to be moved due to fire complaints
The City of Vernon will be moving a bus shelter that has had issues with recent fires.
Back in April, city council inquired about the safety and repeat fires in a transit shelter on 34th Street adjacent to the Wholesale Club. Over the two months following the inquiry, there were two fires in the subject shelter.
The site, which is across the street from the Upper Room Mission, has become a regular stopping area for people experiencing homelessness.
A report to be presented to council Monday, June 24, said city staff and B.C. Transit have determined the bus shelter can be moved to a stop on Route 5 on South Vernon Drive, when the summer construction schedule can accomodate the work.
