New mobile vendor site approved by district council

Coldstream may see more mobile vendors after council approved a new high-profile site for that commercial activity on College Way, across from the Greater Vernon Athletics Park.

District staff say a vendor had been operating a mobile fruit stand for several years in that parking lot/pull-out area near Reservoir Road, without any permits. A complaint was filed with the district in 2023, resulting in the vendor seeking a permit from the municipality.

“As the College Way parking lot/pull-out is not an identified site for mobile vending, a permit could not be issued,” Ryan Roycroft, director of development services, said in a report to council.

Last summer, council directed staff to look into College Way as a potential new vendor location.

“Operations staff has visited the site and did not have any concerns regarding the space, safety, and access,” Roycroft stated.

District staff said the location is highly visible and is more than 250 metres from the highway.

“Operations staff indicated that some minor works can be done within budget to improve this potential vending location. The site could be leveled with a small amount of gravel and magnesium chloride to keep the dust down,” Roycroft stated.

The site could accomodate up to three vendors.

District staff say the revenue from the new site will be minimal, noting there were only three mobile vendors in the community in 2023.

One vendor at the College Way could generate $300 a year.

The district also allows mobile vendors at Coldstream Station on Kalamalka Road.
