Police issue warning about text message scam

Mar 25, 2024 | 2:09 PM

RCMP are alerting residents about a scam that may come in as a text message on your phone.

The text may be from a number in Quebec, and as with almost every scam, it is looking to get people’s money and personal information.

“The text message alleges a speed camera infraction, or other provincial infraction, and asks you to pay a fee to avoid a court date. It then asks you to visit a web site to pay which is entitled bcpay-infractions.com where more personal information would be gathered,” Staff Sgt. Scott West of Salmon Arm RCMP said.

West points out the province of B.C. does not collect fines this way, specifically with a text message.
